How to Find Your Ideal Neighborhood

When searching for your dream home, it can be easy to overlook the importance of your surroundings. Finding the perfect layout or landscape can potentially distract you from observing your new neighborhood. At the Northeast Iowa Regional Board of REALTORS®, we offer these guidelines to help you procure the best possible community for you and your family.

Get a sense of community character

When you pull up in the driveway of your prospective new home, take a look around. Are the yards unkempt? Is the paint peeling on your neighbor’s home? These can be potential red flags as to the character of the community. Linger outside to see if passing neighbors greet you with friendliness or if they stay on their side of the fence. Keep your eyes open for yard signs as well. Local churches often advertise annual block parties or BBQ’s to engage higher community involvement. Always make time to visit the neighborhood at night. By doing so, you can get a sense of the safety and security of the street as well as ensure that noise levels are at an acceptable level.

Research the topography

If you are buying a house in the summer, it can be easy to overlook important physical aspects of your neighborhood. This can potentially put you in the path of everything from flooding to snow pileup. To combat this, research the land that surrounds your home. Look up reviews from other homes and businesses in the area for potential warning signs. Speak with your prospective new neighbors about the street’s snow removal schedule in the winter.  If it’s raining, try to schedule an impromptu tour of the home. When you arrive, make sure to physically feel the walls and floors in the basement to look for possible telltale wet spots. All of this can potentially help limit any future surprises.

Use a Crime Mapping Service

Even after studying your neighborhood, you may not be able to accurately assess the safety of your new community. CrimeReports and SpotCrime provide both crime and police reports to give you a more in-depth look at your new neighborhood. To use, just enter the address where you plan to buy your new home. Their services will display a list of the crimes committed in the vicinity, including a breakdown of the dates and type of crime. By utilizing this tool, you can compare potential neighborhoods to secure the safest option.
